Abacus & Mental Arithmetic
Everything You Need to Know About Our Abacus Program
At Vsuccess Education, we’re committed to the quality of every minute of every lesson—so each child achieves the maximum learning success here.
Abacus Program — Ages 5–6
Australia is a multicultural country. Our students come not only from Chinese backgrounds, but also from Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the U.S. and local Australian families. Teachers in Australian schools recognise the benefits of abacus learning for children.
Background
In early childhood, children often use fingers to add and subtract. Without strengthening number sense, they can become slower and less accurate as numbers get larger. Some children also find it hard to concentrate when they start primary school. Learning abacus helps improve attention and builds mental calculation skills.
Program Features
Abacus learning builds a concrete foundation so children can internalise the calculation process and perform mental arithmetic. Training starts with the physical abacus and gradually transfers to mental imagery. We practise a series of operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and root/square operations.
Schedule
Frequency: Once a week, 1.5 hours per lesson
Course length: Approximately 1 year
Certification: Students are encouraged to sit World Abacus Level Certification

Abacus Intensive Training
This program helps children maintain and sharpen their abacus skills. Just like a swimmer needs water time to stay fast, abacus users need regular practice to keep speed and accuracy. With consistent training, students can avoid skill “rust” and keep their calculation fluency high—abacus is a powerful advanced technique.
Background
After the initial abacus course, many children become busy and stop practising, which leads to slower calculation speed and lower accuracy. A weekly intensive session sustains focused practice so previously learned knowledge doesn’t fade and students continue to improve both speed and precision.
Program Features
Targeted drills develop high-digit computation and mental imagery, for example:
Multi-digit × 1-digit multiplication
3-digit × 2-digit multiplication
Long chains of addition and subtraction with multi-digit numbers
Speed/fluency training using mental abacus
Schedule
Frequency: Once a week, 1 hour per lesson
Competitions: Students are encouraged to participate in World Abacus contests
