Abacus & Mental Arithmetic.
An early foundation that lasts.
Australia is a multicultural country — our students come from Chinese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Vietnamese, American, and local Australian families. Abacus learning builds attention, number sense, and mental calculation skills that primary teachers consistently recognise.
Abacus Program
A one-year program that introduces children to the physical abacus and progressively transfers calculation into mental imagery. The endpoint is World Abacus Level Certification.
Background
In early childhood, children often use fingers to add and subtract. Without strengthening number sense, calculation can become slower and less accurate as numbers grow larger. Some children also find it hard to concentrate when they start primary school. Learning abacus improves attention and builds mental calculation skills that scale with the child.
Program Features
Training starts with the physical abacus and gradually transfers to mental imagery. Students practise a complete set of operations and develop the cognitive scaffolding for fast, accurate mental arithmetic.
Schedule
- Frequency: Once a week, 1.5 hours per lesson
- Course length: Approximately 1 year
- Certification: World Abacus Level Certification upon completion
Intensive Class
For students who have completed the abacus course and want to go further — maintaining speed, accuracy, and building toward World Abacus competition level.
Background
After the initial abacus course, many children become busy and stop practising — leading to slower calculation speed and lower accuracy. A weekly intensive session sustains focused practice so previously learned skills don't fade, and students continue to improve in both speed and precision.
Program Features
Targeted drills develop high-digit computation and mental imagery, including:
- ▪Multi-digit × 1-digit multiplication
- ▪3-digit × 2-digit multiplication
- ▪Long chains of multi-digit addition and subtraction
- ▪Speed and fluency training using mental abacus
Schedule
- Frequency: Once a week, 1 hour per lesson
- Competitions: Encouraged to participate in World Abacus contests
